But since we are children of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. – 1 Thessalonians 5:8
Christians are referred to as children of the day who walk in the light of the Lord. In order to walk around during the day time, we need to put on clothes first! A sober minded person gets dressed before they go out into the world.
But besides actual clothes for our physical being in the physical world, our spiritual being needs clothes as well or else our spirit cannot function in the spirit-world. In the spirit realm there is a constant battle. We must prepare ourselves spiritually just as we prepare physically for each day.
Ephesians tells us to put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) but we must first put clothes on underneath our armor! These clothes are the foundation. So what kind of spiritual clothes do we put on?
Faith, Hope, and Love.
Faith – we need faith to walk with the Lord, our unseen God. Faith is the evidence of things not seen. “Without faith it is impossible to please God,” Hebrews 11:6 – or even to know Him. We walk by faith not by sight. And faith protects us from the arrows of the enemy. From the spirit of doubt. “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29 Faith is the currency of heaven. Our Father is moved by our faith! We need to put on our faith everyday as if it were a pair of glasses, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to see.
Hope – we don’t walk aimlessly forward. We have a hope of glory, an inheritance waiting that is “imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,” 1 Peter 1:4 It is the hope of salvation. The hope of eternal life. Joy forevermore. All of this found in the very presence of God. Our Father longs to give us good things and a rich life. There is hope for our lives because of Jesus. We should put on hope before we even get out of bed. Why else wake up in the morning if you didn’t have hope that this would be a good day? Put on hope, don’t be discouraged. He already died for you before you knew His name, why would He leave you now?
Love – we are called The Beloved. Love is what paid the price for us. Satan can’t lie to us when we know we are loved. His arrows won’t pierce through. Because we are loved we have boldness to approach the Throne of heaven. We have boldness to go out into the world, because once we have been accepted by Jesus we are un-rejectable. We are sons and daughters of a loving Father. We need to put on love everyday as a garment! Love is what makes up our very identity. We need to receive Jesus’ love as He gives it freely to us unreserved and unrestrained.
These three things are necessary to walk with Jesus. We must put on these things as clothing everyday.
How do we put them on?
We choose. Choose to have faith in our faithful God, choose to know you are loved even if you don’t feel it, and choose to hope in Jesus even when your circumstances say otherwise.
Because we don’t look to the seen, but the unseen! “as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18
The unseen is our reality. Faith, hope, and love aren’t seen as physical clothes, but they are necessary to have a relationship with Jesus and they are the reality of who we are in Him.
“Because Your love is better than life, my lips will glorify You.”
– Psalm 63:3
