Many Christians often say, “Show people your faith through your actions and if necessary use words.” But can this really be true? Are our actions really more important than our words?
In the Bible words went before action. When God created the world He said; “Let there be light” and there was light (Genesis 1:3). The light did not first occur and then He said “this is light”. Words came first. And what about all the prophesies in the Old Testament that told about the coming Jesus-Messiah, the prophesies were there before Jesus came, again words before action. And what about the New Testament-Jesus said He was the Son of God and proved it later by dying on the cross and arising from death 3 days later. Again words came before action. If God created the world with nothing else than words, words sure have power. The words you use have power.
If Jesus had not used words, He would just have drawn people to Himself- not to God. If He had never told people He was the Son of God and had not used words, Christianity would not exist.
Our faith cannot rely on our actions only. If we fail to tell people why we act like we do, we draw people to ourselves and not to God; we make our actions about us, while they really are about God. The One who makes us able to do what we do and hopefully also the reason behind our actions.
I do not say our actions do not matter. They do. Our words must be followed by our actions. Like the examples from the Bible I mentioned above. If we do not live in agreement with what we say, our words will have no impact.
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. – Romans 10:17
But unless Christ’s Word is preached, there’s nothing to listen to. – The Message
This Scripture really tells us the importance of sharing the gospel using words.
Let us live a life according to the words we preach and let us share the good news undaunted and relentlessly. Because we are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14) and if we do not use our voice and our words to share the good news our light will fade. To share the good news with everyone-to tell people about our Jesus-that is our mission as Christians.
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. – Matthew 7: 24-27
