Thursday, October 16- It may have been a cloudy, small-chance-of-rain kind of day in Detroit but on the second floor of the One Woodward Building, it was anything but gloomy. Fashion influencers, trendsetters, followers, and business owners from near and far came together for FashionSpeak 2014!
The nine-hour conference consisted of six presenters from Michigan that have thrived in their respective fields. It began promptly at 9am with Rachel Lutz of The Peacock Room. Lutz spoke on defining, creating loyalty, and handling a brand through different circumstances. Jeanette Puig-Pey and Bridget Sullivan of Lear Corporation soon followed and discussed the various processes that occurs from the design to manufacturing department while emphasizing the importance of fabric design within the automotive industry. Matthew Burnett, co-founder and CEO of Maker’s Row spoke to the audience via webcam on his innovative company and all things regarding a product’s supply chain.
After lunch provided by Buddy’s, Malina Gilchrist, senior editor of The New York Times’ T Magazine, explained the importance of trend forecasting, building a quality portfolio, knowing your point of view as a designer, and having a dedicated heart in any field of work in order to succeed. The last presenter of the day was fashion designer Tracy Reese who is known for her feminine collections, her board membership of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and dressing first lady, Michelle Obama. Her inspiring Q&A with Karen Buscemi was a testimony of her life’s work, risks, challenges, and triumphs along with helpful advice to young designers.
