Guest Feature: Emily Ray of Modern Midwest Maven

Here’s another exciting Michigan blogger feature for you all! I’m so excited to share with you cheer coach/fashion blogger/communications and marketing professional/beauty enthusiast Emily Ray of Modern Midwest Maven. When I visited Emily’s blog for the first time, I immediately sensed the professionalism and innovative punch she incorporated in all of her posts. Read about her passion for the beauty and fashion industry and her goals for MMM below. Enjoy!

1. Why did you start blogging?
I started blogging to find a creative outlet to showcase both my writing skills and my love for fashion and trends. I have loved clothes, makeup, and accessories for many years and wanted to share that passion with the world! Creating a blog seemed like the next logical step beyond giving friends and family advice and pointers and it has been a fun journey getting to know myself better along the way.

2. When did your love for fashion and beauty begin?
I grew up around a family who owned a bridal salon for many years.  Spending my time there on weekends in middle school and high school playing dress up and previewing the latest prom and cocktail dress trends was always exciting.  That environment really jump started my love for fashion and beauty beyond heading to the mall with friends to buy a new pair of jeans and a lip gloss.  Looking through the collection look books really helped me learn what silhouettes flatter my figure and from there it became a hobby and passion to continue to learn as much as I could.

 3. What are your current favorite trends for fashion and beauty?
For summer I am in love with three major trends: maxi dresses, tribal prints, and bold lip color.  Being petite, it can be difficult to find long dresses for the hot summer months but because they’ve been so on trend, more and more options and shapes are emerging and I love it!  Tribal is so hot for summer – I love the bold patterns and colors.  It’s an effortless way to look pulled together and on-trend.  Bold lips look great for the summer months when you don’t feel like doing a full face of makeup.  Skip the heavy eyeshadow and liner, keep it simple with mascara and bronzer and reach for a bold coral, lilac, or neon pink lip instead!

4. In three words, how would you describe your style?
Sassy, sophisticated, timeless.

5. Where do you find inspiration and creativity?
I love to read and listen to music.  I also spend a lot of time reading blogs online, and keeping up with all the big fashion sites and magazines.  Between keeping up with the latest celebrity red carpet looks and critiquing wardrobe on shows like Revenge, Scandal, and Pretty Little Liars, I find ideas and pieces that are similar to my own wardrobe and mix and match.  I’ve always been very into art as well so sketching, whether it be a picture of my dog or my dream wedding gown, can be therapeutic and inspiring.  Finally, nature is a huge inspiration.  I love spending time outdoors in the summer and fall, and there are so many great color and texture inspirations right outside your door, you just have to take the time to notice.

6. What are three of your closet essentials? Three beauty essentials?
Closet Essentials:
Dark Skinny Ankle Crop Jean
Black Peep Toe Platform Pump
Simple, Flowy Tank with Embellishment

Beauty Essentials:
Tinted Moisturizer
Mascara
Tinted Lip Balm

7. As a mid-westerner myself, what do you think us MMMs can bring to the fashion industry?
As a mid-westerner, I think there is a huge likability and relate-ablility factor that comes into play with creating a following.  We are “the girls next door” and not just showing off our latest splurge from Rodeo Drive or Fifth Avenue.  I think we bring a common-everyday voice that lets females of every walk of life know that it is okay to want to look great in a cost-effective way.  No need to break the bank with designer head to toe – you have the ability to be your own fashion editor and make figure-flattering choices that also flatter your bank account.

8. What is your goal(s) for MMM to accomplish?
I would love for MMM to continue to grow its readership, and gain a larger following.  There is so much out there in the way of fashion blogs, so I am constantly thinking about ways to differentiate myself with DIYs, YouTube tutorials, and innovative outfits and photographs.  My ultimate goal is to one day be able to make a living from by blog, and have some stellar collaborations with bloggers that I aspire to be, along with timeless, classic brands.

9. Where can people find you?
When I’m not working as a marketing professional at a retail design firm in the Metro Detroit area, you can probably find me coaching a cheer practice or game at Wayne State University.  This is my third year as the head coach, and we are making some great progress with the program.  Outside of work, you can find me playing with my adorable dachshund, Sadie (you can see her all over my blog in cameos) and spending time with family, friends, or a good book.
